Our State-approved Apprentice Training Programs provide an opportunity for balanced on-the-job training and related technical classroom instruction to achieve the status of Journeyperson. The length of the program depends on the trade selected and can range from three to five years.

  1. How to get started
Go to the About the Programs section for the addresses and phone numbers of apprenticeship programs. Contact the programs of your choice. They will give you more information about applying to their program, entrance requirements such as testing, and have you fill out an application.
  2. Selection of Apprentices
To be selected as an Apprentice many programs require a certain level of English and Math ability. A candidate with passing test scores will be offered an oral interview to speak with members of the Training Committee about their apprentice training program. To learn more about any required testing and how to prepare for the test go to the About the Programs section of this site.
  3. Requirements of Apprentices
Once you are registered as an apprentice you will be assigned full-time employment in your selected trade under the supervision of a journeyman. Each program has a list of the required classes and these can be seen in the City College Catalog in the Apprenticeship section. Each semester you will attend at least one class in a related instructional program.
  4. Successful Completion
Upon completion of all on-the-job training and required college classes, you will receive your Certificate of Achievement from the college (see Graduation) and your Journeyperson card from the California Division of Apprenticeship Standards. Additionally, the Associate in Science degree is awarded by completing the District's General Education requirements.
