Educational Building Design Process
Project Contact: Donna Budzynski, Leslie Seiger, and Steven Siegel
Description of Project
With the passage of Proposition S, the SDCCD entered an exciting time of development. For the past two years, the New Building Committee of the School of Mathematics and Natural Sciences at Mesa College has worked diligently on developing a plan for our future facility. This has included detailed needs analysis by our departments, designs for department specific spaces and plans for common areas. We have learned a great deal during this process and have made excellent progress on our plan; however, we are now at the point where additional research is required to plan a state-of-the-art facility.
Our proposed is twofold: initially we will gather the additional necessary information and then summarize our process for others to use. First, we will conduct literature research into current trends in educational facilities and green building technologies. Appropriate conferences on these topics will be identified for committee members to attend. We will also identify sites to visit. For example, we might visit a recently completed college science building that incorporates some of the features we have identified. Members making these trips will report back to the committee.
Next, and most importantly, we will summarize our process thus far and incorporate the new information gleaned from literature, conferences and site visits. The main focus of this will be the development of the "Educational Building Design Process" that can be used by other similar committees in the SDCCD. This will include a detailed description of the process and a flow chart that can be used to help establish building committees, as well as guidelines for active participation of departments/schools in the planning of new buildings. Additionally, we will provide a recommended timeline and planning questionnaire forms for departments to complete. The needs analysis process will be outlined, and we will give specific recommendations for subcommittees and their goals. To assist in planning, members of our committee will be available for future consultation with other building committees and for FLEX workshops.
