Increasing Student Achievement through WebCT
Based Probationary Student Workshop
Project Contact: Art Boyd, Naomi Grisham, and Ben Weaver
Description of Project
The counseling department proposes the development of a probationary workshop to be offered through WebCT (the district standard for online course development and delivery system) to address students who are placed on probation for academic or lack of progress caused. The plan involves making proactive interventions with students identified in the aforementioned categories as a means of thwarting possible disqualification and/or suspension. The initial iteration will take place in the spring 2005 semester only; 4,013 (16% students are on probation at San Diego Mesa College. By offering this workshop, we will empower students to build self-confidence and esteem; develop approaches to take control of their education; and hopefully to instill the necessary skills and techniques to be successful utilizing the department's present student learning outcome modality. The workshop content will include information on the higher educational system, GPA calculation and projection, study skills, use of progress reports, utilizing resources, and career and educational planning. Additionally, the workshop content will deal with all areas of Student Learning Outcomes defined by the Division of Student Services.
