Project Contact: Pat Mosteller
Description of Project
This project consists of research, staff development, curriculum development and training for SDCCD (and specifically CE) faculty in the areas of music, the arts and communications for older adults, one of the nine state-mandated, non-credit disciplines eligible for funding. Areas addressed will be: the science of teaching adults or "andragogy" as differentiated from pedagogy, learning styles of older adults, modern gerontological theories of the life span as related to learning, role changes in the maturation process, current trends in older adult education (including community benefit), the significance of psychological vs. chronological age, related "Lifewide Learning" topics. Faculty will be better trained in areas that promote concrete learning (including informational retention) , cognitive health, responsiveness, motivation and positive outlook in their older adult students. Research and training will be conducted in collaboration with the county office of Aging and Independent Services (AIS) and San Diego State University. The project will include (at least) three distinct all day workshops, one for each of the subjects identified as areas of interest/benefit to the older learner. Instructional workbooks (including research results, curriculum, sample lesson plans, teaching techniques, pre and post tests, and lab activities/experiences) will be developed for each of the included subject areas.
