Online Counseling

Description of Project
The Counseling Department of City College intends to develop a pilot program, which will provide a comprehensive array of on-line counseling and advising services for students. We recognize on-line education potential for full time equivalent student growth, as it providing greater and access to educational opportunities. It is our position that we must provide on-line advising and counseling services to fully meet the needs of these distant students as soon as possible. The proposed program will be created with established guidelines for usage. However, some students will be allowed access to an online counseling appointment (the appointment will only be conducted after students have been verified through an encrypted web page). The program will also allow all students email access for limited advising. Other components will be online career assessment and additional workshops (made available to any student), a student portal page for viewing and accessing individual education plans, a chat room, and bulletin board for group interaction at appointed times. As the program grows and needs become apparent, new services will be added.

The increase in on-line classes creates the expectation by our students, that there will be equivalent student support online. This project is consistent with the projected growth of on-line education in the district and it is intended to maximize the success of these on-line education efforts. We recognize the importance of providing the matriculation services of online/distance counseling, advising, and orientation and follow up services.
