What is the Jump Start - Summer Career Institutes program?

Jump Start is a partnership between the San Diego Community College District (SDCCD) and San Diego City Schools. It is a summer bridging program for high school students designed to improve student learning and workplace readiness through a rigorous educational and workplace experience.

All students are just finishing their junior or senior years, are eligible to work in the US, have at least one or more years coursework in one of the three career pathways. Students attend a three week introductory course in:

What are internships and how long do interns work for my company?

Our interns come from high school career-technical programs that emphasize both academic and technical preparation and training for careers in your industry. They now need exposure to a real work-site where they can apply what they have learned in the classroom and explore various career ladders and related skill and educational requirements.
If you select an intern from Jump Start - Summer Career Institutes we need you to engage this intern at least half-time, not to exceed full-time for 60 hours. The student will be receiving one college credit for their work, based on hours of work.
Additionally, we are working with employers to design these internships as "project-based internships". This type of internship defines a specific activity the intern will be able to work on and complete by the end of the internship.

How many internships do you need?

We need 25 internships in each cluster, a total of 75 internships.

What type of students participate in the Summer Career Institutes? Students:
  • Have completed their junior or senior years of high school
  • Have a GPA of 2.0 or higher
  • Have one year or more of high school instruction in your industry cluster

  • Understand that they are expected to perform work functions that benefit you, the employer
