What do I get out of this program?

As a participant of the program, you will gain experience in college level work, earn up to five units of college credit, and gain relevant work experience in your career field of interest through a 60 hour internship.

Does it cost anything for me to participate in the program?

No. College tuition and fees, are paid by the community college if you are a high school junior.
If you have your own car, we won't be able to pay for your gas. In addition you must find and fund your own transportation.

How long does it take to complete the program?
    • Three weeks of intensive college coursework at Mesa, City, or Miramar college
    • 60 hours in an internship in your chosen career pathway

Do I need to have previous working experience in an industry to be eligible for the program?

No, the only eligibility requirements are:
    • One year or more of high school instruction in the designated career pathway
    • High school junior in Spring prior to Summer Career Institutes
    • Grade point average of 2.0 or better
    • Legally able to work in the United States
    • No plan to attend summer school

Which industries will I have internship opportunities to select from?

How do I register for the program?

First, you'll need to submit a student interest card that can be obtained in your classrooms. Then, you'll need to complete the following registration forms:
  1. Complete Admission of Special Part-time Student (yellow form) which includes:
    • Principal/Counselor approval for courseload
    • Parent permission
    • Registrar's verification of your cumulative grade point average
  2. Complete the San Diego Community College District application
  3. Be able to provide U.S. citizenship verification with two forms of identification (i.e. social security card, driver's license, passport, etc.)
  4. Complete "Release for Use of Photo" form

Where and when can I pick up all of these forms?

The pre-enrollment parent /consent and skill set form will be mailed to your home. Your Employment Outreach Specialist and/or teacher will provide and assist you with completing all other forms prior to the orientation.

Can I register online?

You can enroll with San Diego Community College District online here. All other forms must be completed prior or during your orientation with Jumpstart staff.

What happens after I complete the registration process?

Jumpstart staff will invite you to attend an orientation at your school at scheduled times once we receive your interest card. At the orientation, you will be given an overview of the three-week college course and 60 hour internship component. Transportation issues will be addressed, instructions for setting up free e-mail through Yahoo.com will be provided. In addition, we'll explain and assist you with completing the forms listed above if needed.
On completion of your orientation/registration session. You will attend a three-week college course then participate in the internship.
